La Cava del Bierzo

The Winery

The "Cava del Bierzo" winery was born in January 2008 as the logical consequence of numerous conversations held by the three friends who form the commercial society, so as to exploit the purchase of the premises of a small family winery. Our premises are located in the village of Valtuille de Abajo, right next to the “Castro Bergidum” (Bergidum Hill), which is generally considered, both geographically and emotionally, to be the "heart" of viticulture in El Bierzo. Even if our premises are capable of producing three times our present production, we have decided to limit the amount of grapes collected (belonging to the Mencía variety) to 100,000 Kg. This fact allows us to elaborate our brands of limited production wines with exquisite care. In our "ageing" cellar you can find a small number of selected barrels, from French and American oak and used to elaborate our "Crianza" wine, and some French oak barrel for our Galanto young oak wine.

Despite the youthfulness of our company, we have been linked to the wine production for more than 15 years.

2008 was our first vintage. We introduced our first wine, a carbonic maceration wine, on October 25 2008, 36 days after the grape harvest had started. This wine granted us our first award, a silver "Zarcillo" (second prize) in the 2009 edition of these renowned awards.
